Flavor Of The Week: Introduction
Novelty-seeking, or just short attention span?

I’ve always prided myself as someone who loves novelty — be it with food, activities, or relationships in general. Trying out new things has been my thang since I was a kid, which was not surprising why I tuned out to be a Jack (or in this case, Jill) of all trades, master of none.
I hardly questioned it for the past 28 years of my life — until last week when I bought an electronic drum.
Granted I got it because Gary had just left for Taiwan on a work trip (which means that I have a lot more time not walking around Singapore exploring all the glorious food it has to offer), but the drums have been an instrument that I wanted to pick up ever since my pop-punk-exclusive MP3 playlist back in 2005.
I was so excited when it arrived that I had it set up immediately and tried my hands on it as soon as possible. My hand-feet coordination was no doubt terrible, but who cares — I’m finally on my way to becoming a drummer!
I was pretty stoked to show my mum what I’ve been up to, and when we finally got the chance to chat I flashed my new drum set and flexed a couple of beats that I’ve been working on earlier during the day.
Being an Asian mum I wasn’t expecting her to say that I was a prodigy or any compliments of sorts, but man was I bummed when the first thing she said was that “the drum looks good enough to resell”.
Excuse me? I literally got this less than 24 hours ago.
And so it begins the debate of the night — how she thought I’m always quick to pick up new hobbies (and quitting prematurely); and in my defense how I am doing it because I love new experiences and picking up new skills.
